Herb Connolly Chevrolet is pleased to announce our partnership with Cell Phones for Soldiers as a drop off location for unwanted cell phone donations. Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the non-profit organization has raised almost $2 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

The organization hopes to continue turning old and unwanted cell phones into more than 12 million minutes of prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas. To do so, Cell Phones for Soldiers expects to collect 50,000 cell phones each month through a network of more than 3,000 collection sites across the country. Herb Connolly Chevrolet is now one of those locations!

You can help support the brave men and women who serve in our military by simply donating any unwanted cell phone you have. The money earned from the sale or recycling of these phones is then used to purchase prepaid calling cards for our soldiers overseas. As a special gift for donating, Herb Connolly Chevrolet will also give you a FREE Car Wash and Vacuum service!

According to Robbie Bergquist, co-founder of Cell Phones for Soldiers, there are more than 130 million cell phones retired every year in the United States. The reuse and recycling of your old phone can have a significant impact, and help a soldier call home! Ask your friends and neighbors to get involved too. Together we can make a simple call home mean so much.

Even the best business has room for improvement. That’s why we make the effort to constantly seek out the latest technologies, best practices, and newest trends so that we can grow and improve as a dealership, and offer our customers the benefits of our up-to-date training.

On July 18th, Adam Connolly traveled to Chicago to participate in a Hyundai “20 Group” conference. These type of conferences allow dealerships from across the country to share their ideas, learn new ways to do things, and consult with industry leaders. Several automotive experts attended to give tips on how to make changes, such as making service visits shorter for customers, ways to keep pricing lower, methods of increasing value in your vehicles, and how to utilize new internet technologies.

We continually strive to move forward and be cutting-edge! We know our customers appreciate doing business with a dealership that is never completely satisfied with the “status quo!” Our constant evaluation of our practices means the best possible car buying experience for you!

This summer Connolly Automotive Group lent a helping hand to a local school in an unusual way! Brophy Elementary, in Framingham MA, was in need of new Playground Fibar mulch, and the Parent Teacher Organization is required to fund this project. The PTO has so many important financial responsibilities, such as new computers for classrooms, and child care during parent-teacher conferences, that Connolly Automotive Group decided to take on this financial burden and re-mulch the property for the first time in 3 years.

Over $5,000 worth of  mulch covered 180 yards of the playground and swing set areas of the school, and were spread using the Connolly’s front end loader machine which is used for snow removal in the winter! This was a creative use for the machine, and we were happy to help however we could! We hope the students and families of Brophy Elementary enjoy their beautiful newly mulched outdoor space!

2010 marks the twelfth year that Hyundai and its dealers have been committed to supporting the fight against childhood cancer. What began in 1998 as a local initiative supported by New England-area Hyundai dealers to raise funds for the Jimmy Fund at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has evolved into Hyundai Hope on Wheels, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which is supported nationwide by all of Hyundai’s 780 dealers and Hyundai Motor America. Since 1998, Hyundai Hope on Wheels has donated more than $14 million to children’s hospitals nationwide to help kids fight cancer. Every time a new Hyundai vehicle is sold in the U.S., $5 is donated to Hope on Wheels.

Hyundai Hope on Wheels is led by an executive board of Hyundai dealers, including Oscar Leeser, chairman, (El Paso, TX), Gary Micaleff (Everett, WA), and Mike Kelly (Butler, PA). The Hope on Wheels Medical Advisory Board is made up of leaders in cancer research treatment, including Dr. Leonard Sender (Children’s Hospital of Orange County), Dr. David Poplack (Texas Children’s Cancer Center) and Dr. Dan Wechsler (Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center), and has provided essential guidance in the establishment of Hyundai Hope on Wheels and the Hyundai Scholars program.

Colorful handprints on a white Santa Fe

The Hope on Wheels Tour is the united effort of Hyundai dealers across the country to raise awareness about childhood cancer and celebrate the lives of the courageous children battling the disease. This summer, the Hope on Wheels Tour will travel to 42 children’s hospitals across the country and donate more than $2 million to support further training and research for doctors involved in childhood cancer research, making it the largest single year of donations in the organization’s history. Hyundai Hope on Wheels designates the medical professionals supported by these donations as Hyundai Scholars.

The 2010 Tour will also host Handprint Ceremonies for childhood cancer patients, both past and present, at the 42 children’s hospitals receiving donations. The symbol of the Hope on Wheels Tour is a white Hyundai Santa Fe covered with colorful handprints representing childhood cancer patients from all over the country. The Handprint Ceremony celebrates the courage of childhood cancer patients by capturing their colorful handprints on the white Santa Fe; children attending the ceremony are asked to lend a hand and place their own handprints on the car to commemorate their battle with cancer. Why handprints? Because there’s nothing more personal than a handprint – and the goal of the Hope on Wheels Tour is to share the personal triumphs of each of these children with other childhood cancer patients and their families across the country. Whether it’s completing a round of chemo, celebrating a beautiful new head of hair or receiving a clean bill of health, one childhood cancer patient’s milestone can be another’s symbol of hope.

1931 Buick

When we say we’ve been around for a long time, we aren’t kidding! We are excited to have recently restored this 1931 Buick series 8-57 car, which was sold new by our great grandfather Herb Connolly Sr. in 1931. Its amazing to have this piece of history to remind us of how far we have come, while still upholding the family business started over 90 years ago! Its a great car that is fun to have and drive, but is especially neat because of the story behind the car!

This car was owned by one person, who owned it from 1931-1956, when he traded in back in to us for a 1956 Buick Century convertible in bittersweet and white. At the time he traded it back, the ’31 Buick had 35,000 miles on it. We have owned it since that day and it currently has only 39,545 miles. It was the first car in a collection that our grandfather Herb started in which he had a 1921 Buick, as well as a ’41, ’51, ’61,’71, ’81 and ’91! A few years after Herb’s death in 1995 all the cars needed major restoration work and were all sold, with the exception of the 1931. It had not been driven since 1988 and sat in a garage for over 20 years. It was recently restored to driving condition by Spencer Gruber of Spencer’s Restorations (hyperlink) in CT, who did an outstanding job! It took him over a year to find and fabricate many parts for this vehicle to drive again!

Our Dad drove it the first day we had it back, and he thinks it drives as well as it ever did. It was remarkable to hear him recall driving this same car in their driveway back in the late ’50′s when he was 12 or 13 years old! It has 26.45 horsepower, a 3 speed transmission, and has its original interior and paint on the body. The wood spoke wheels are original..so we will not drive any faster than 30 mph until those are replaced. The car represents a special connection to our family’s past and future here at Connolly Automotive Group.
