The Framingham Public Library presents their 2nd Annual Winter Art & Craft Fair on December 11th, being held between 10 am – 3 pm, featuring handmade gift items created by local artisans.  Herb Connolly Automotive Group is donating funding for the bake sale at this event, which will benefit Literacy Unlimited. There will be over twenty local artisans and crafters to fulfill your holiday shopping needs. You can buy a chance on winning one of many great raffle prizes, check out some books and maybe even buy a little something for yourself all in one visit. Be sure to sample some of the wonderful baked goods from a special holiday Literacy Unlimited Bake Sale while you are here!

The Connolly donation will go towards Literacy Unlimited. These corporate and private donations and proceeds from monthly bake sales help provide the funding for the books and other materials needed in tutoring adults. Literacy Unlimited is a group of volunteers that tutors adults in English as a second language, basic literacy, citizenship and GED preparation. Established in 1986 and housed in the Framingham Public Library, Literacy Unlimited is a member of Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts and ProLiteracy America. They are supported with a combination of public and private funding.

The mission of Literacy Unlimited is to provide a solid, comprehensive program for training and supporting volunteers to teach basic reading, writing and/or math skills to adult learners, including those for whom English is a foreign language. They are dedicated to increasing public awareness of the need to eliminate illiteracy in our community and expanding the availability of educational programs that accomplish this. They hold the belief that literacy strengthens society and promotes equality among its members.

The tutoring we offer is confidential, individualized, student-centered, and free of charge. Adult learners and tutors, who usually work one-on-one, are carefully matched and supported to insure the best opportunity for the student to reach his/her individual goals. Typical goals the students achieve include becoming employed or become better employed, getting citizenship, finishing a GED, getting a driver’s license, learning to read to their children or simply becoming confident to function in our community. Friends of Literacy Unlimited, Inc. www.friendsofliteracyunlimited.org

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The initial pilot program was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide program.

As the Holiday Season approaches, it is time once again to remember the thousands of children who would not celebrate the Season without the selfless efforts of the U.S. Marines and the wonderful folks at TOYS FOR TOTS! This year, Connolly Chevrolet will again be a primary drop point for your toy donation!

As always, we will feature a new pickup truck in the Chevy showroom where you can drop off your donation of NEW, UNWRAPPED, NON-VIOLENT TOYS for children up to 16 years old. The people at Toys For Tots have requested that donations be made prior to December 17, 2010 so that they have time to wrap and distribute the toys. Each of the last two years we were able to collect four truck loads of toys!! This year we would love to exceed that amount, as we anticipate even greater need this year. Please help us to help others.

When dropping off your donation, please be sure to drop your business card or fill out you info on site, and place it into the large package in the showroom. You’ll be entered into a sweepstakes for a gift certificate worth $50.00 at Honey of a Ham! The winner will be announced on December 18th.

Halloween Fun! There’s more to pumpkin carving than slanty eyes and toothy grins. At the Roger Williams Park Zoo Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. until October 31^st in Providence, visitors can gaze at more than 5,000 illuminated gourds with intricate designs depicting dinosaurs, historical figures, celebrities and more.

The nighttime event waves its way through the zoo’s quarter-mile dirt path past a lake and marshland, and one thing is for sure: This is the Halloween event you won’t see anywhere else.

This year’s theme, “A Walk Through Time,” includes scenes from “The Jurassic Era,”  “The Dawn of Man,” “The Renaissance,” “The Growth of Democracy”, “The Wild West,” and “The 20^th Century.” While you will not catch glimpses of the animals, you will experience the eerie glow of thousands of jack-o-lanterns displayed in a spooky forest, under the moonlight.

In September, Adam and Doug Connolly were invited to the 2010 Hyundai Dealers Convention in Korea. The purpose of the trip was for dealers to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the parent company Hyundai Motor Corporation which works in conjunction with it’s American counterpart, Hyundai Motor America. The Connolly brothers jumped on the opportunity to visit this part of eastern Asia they had never been before, and get to see where the cars they sell are designed and produced. It was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, so read on to see photos and hear about what they saw and learned!

Hyundai Motor Corporation is a very big company in Korea.  Hyundai is a conglomerate not only involved in the Auto industry but in Steel manufacturing, Ship building, Construction, Heavy Duty equipment, Hotels, gas stations, and more.  They have a huge presence worldwide and are not only in North and South America and Europe but have expanded to India, China and Russia to name a few.

Adam says “We arrived into Seoul on Mon. September 13th.  After some time to adjust to the time change (13 hours ahead of our current eastern standard time!) we were invited to the Hyundai Headquarters in Seoul.  At this briefing we toured the Headquarters and were briefed on the history of Hyundai taking us to the current time, corporate outlook, company philosophy and future goals.  They are a very “driven” company.  They have made tremendous strides in product quality over the last few years.”

“From there we went to their Research and Development Center in Namyang on Tuesday.  It was here we were able to see what they do in research and development from taking a product from idea to reality.  We also were able to test drive their newest entry into the North American market, the luxury Equus sedan.  We also witnessed an actual crash test in an all new Hybrid Sonata and how safe the vehicle is.”

“On Wednesday we visited the Hyundai Steel factory in Dangjin.  This plant is extremely ecologically friendly (so is Hyundai’s whole company) with some of the latest environmental friendly fail-safe’s.  This was really neat in seeing how the steel is created from Iron ore and eventually processed to steel ready for automobile assembly.  Hyundai is going to triple it’s ability to produce steel by 2015.  I don’t think there are many car companies that produce their own steel!”

“After the steel tour Thursday we got to go to the Aslan Plant Tour where they build the Sonata and Azera (named Grandeur in the Korean domestic market) starting with how they “stamp” the steel into automotive parts down to the final roll off, of the completed vehicle.  Amazing how much Robotics (also a huge Hyundai initiative) or Robots play a role in assembly.”

They also got to check out some local tourist attractions including the Jeju folk village, Seongsan Sun Rising Peak, Namsan Tower, In-Sa Dong shopping area, and took a tour of the beautiful Gyungbok Palace.

Adam also reports, “From a local standpoint Hyundai will begin building Elantra in the United states end of this year.  So in 2011 we will have the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra built in Alabama while the Sonata is built in GA.  300 – 400k units of production of those models will be assembled here in the U.S. You could have more than 50% of all Hyundai’s sold here in the U.S. being built here in the U.S.”
